Call-Net sacks 31 Fonorola executives

Call-Net Enterprises Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, has terminated the top executives of Fonorola Inc., including its vice-chairman and president Jan Peeters, following its C$1.8-billion acquisition of the company. According to Call-Net's chairman, president and CEO, Juri Koor, each of the 31 positions has been identified as redundant. The position held by Fonorola's CEO, CFO and COO have been taken by Koor and Call-Net's top executives. Meanwhile, the acquisition of Fonorola, will make the merged company the top-ranked alternative long-distance company.

Bell cuts overseas business rates

Bell Canada, the largest telephone company in Canada, has imposed an average 28% cut on long-distance telephone rates for its business customers on calls made to 62 countries. Bell Canada also extended the lower-per-minute charge plan it offers to business cutomers for calls to those countries, which previously applied during office hours only, to 24 hours each day. The rate reduction followed a decision of Bell Canada to reduce rates for overseas phone calls made by its residential customers to 28 countries by an average of 45%.
