Ninety-one candidates are running for office in the final elections in a united Northwest Territories. In 1999, the province will divide into Nunavut and another yet unnamed province. Leading politicians in the consensus run government are Stephen Kakfwi, David Aglukark, George Cleary and Roy Erasmus.

On the offensive: friction over social policy ignites sparks among the provinces
Article Abstract:
The leaders met to discuss social policy reforms, but were distracted by an Ontario government idea, as described in a paper by economist Thomas Courchene, to totally dismantle federal social programs and empower the provinces. Poorer provinces bitterly opposed such decentralization.

Cournoyea is leaving Northwest Territories politics to work for the land claims of the Inuvialuit people. She believes she has accomplished much in her years as a territorial politician and hopes that the new government will work to make the transition into two territories smoother.
