Foreign trade missions of the type Jean Chretien and some 300 prominent Canadians are presently engaged in are treated by the media as politically significant events. This is due in large part to the bonding that often takes place on such tours between correspondents and politicians.

Mission of mercy: Canada takes the lead as refugees pour out of Zaire

The situation in Zaire began to change as plans were being made for the Canadian-led United Nations rescue operation. An estimated 350,000 Rwandan refugees began a trek back to their homes. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien led the move to intervene in Zaire.
