Can I.B.M. learn from a unit it freed? Lexmark wins praise for innovative style and new printers
Article Abstract:
Lexmark International Inc, Lexington, KY, which came into being as a consequence of Clayton & Dubilier Inc's acquisition of IBM's information Products division, is doing well. Lexmark might be seen as a model of the semi-independent, autonomous business operation that IBM wants to create as the giant company tries to reorganize and decentralize itself. After the buyout, Lexmark moved into the laser printer market. Lexmark, which can still use the IBM name, introduced the IBM Laserprinter 4029 series, priced between $1,595 and $2,995, with 600 dot-per-inch print resolution. Lexmark's printers have received good reviews, and PC Magazine selected Lexmark products for a 'technical excellence' citation. Lexmark is campaigning aggressively to become known in a market dominated by Hewlett-Packard Co. Lexmark exemplifies how a more flexible organizational structure can benefit IBM.

A way to make the easiest even easier
Article Abstract:
Apple introduces At Ease, a data security software package that acts as a new Apple Macintosh shell and makes using the Apple Mac even easier than before. The $59 software works as an operating system enhancement to System 7, taking advantage of the new system software's aliasing features. At Ease separates all the contents of a hard disk into two folders containing applications and actual files. The software incorporates a helpful data security feature that keeps unwanted users from reading specific files. At Ease caters to family and educational environments where children might use the computer and adults might want to protect or restrict some of the computer's contents. The software can hide the trash can and block access to the Finder.
