CanWest eyes Thomson papers
Article Abstract:
CanWest Global Communications Corp. (Winnipeg) is interested in buying the five Canadian newspapers that Thomson Corp. is selling. According to Leonard Asper, CanWest president and CEO, linking CanWest's broadcasting properties with Thomson's newspapers will allow the company to develop Internet properties that exploit the content of each. Analysts estimate that Thomson could get about US$300-million for the five daily publications, which are the Winnipeg Free Press (Manitoba), Brandon Sun (Manitoba), the Chronicle-Journal (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Medicine Hat News (Alberta), and The Lethbridge Herald (Alberta). The Globe and Mail is the only one of the Thomson's scores of newspapers in Canada and the US that was not put on the block in February. Other contenders for the Canadian newspapers are Quebecor Inc., the Retirement Systems (Alabama), Lee Enterprises Inc., Medianews Group Inc., and Gannett Co. Inc. Quebecor already owns a number of newspaper assets and purchasing the Thomson papers will allow it to expand its corporate business to key markets such as Winnipeg and Lethbridge.
