Agrium mulls purchasing Unocal fertilizer plants
Article Abstract:
Agrium Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, is considering an acquisition of the fertilizer facilities and distribution centers located in western US from owner Unocal Corp. of California. Agrium, the largest nitrogen producer in North America, considered a purchase after exceeding analysts' expectations in posting earnings of $19 million for third quarter ended September 30, 1998. Unocal is mulling placing two ammonia-fertilizer facilities in Alaska, one in Washington and distribution centers in western US on the sale block. Agrium president and CEO John Von Brunt said Unocal's fertilizer assets is attractive because of their locations, with nearly 70% of Agrium's sales are in western Canada and in the US Pacific Northwest.
