CanWest nears NetStar deal
Article Abstract:
CanWest Global Communications of Winnipeg, Manitoba, is about to close a deal to acquire NetStar Communications Inc. of Toronto, Ontario for about C$900 million. New York-based ESPN Inc., NetStar's largest shareholder, will not sell its 32% stake, but other shareholders will, according to sources. Stephen Bronfman of Claridge Inc. and Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec will cash out their stake of 22.5% each and so is Reitmans (Canada) Ltd., which has a 16.7% stake. The sale, if it pushes through, will cap CanWest's efforts to become a diversified broadcasting conglomerate.
