Roberto Maroni, Italian Cabinet Minister's suggestion that Italy should conduct a referendum to bring back the lira was made during the French and Dutch referendums, which rejected the proposed European constitution. His suggestion was important as it reinforced the implicit message of the French and Dutch referendums that cultural and political factors were forcing out economic considerations in old Europe.

Cold comfort
Article Abstract:
The avian flu pandemic that is threatening to engulf Asia and parts of Europe in 2005 would cause immeasurable human suffering, but the economic fallout would last much longer and spread far wider. A runaway pandemic would hit commodity prices, stock markets would close and oil prices would plummet because of the ending of the economic booms in China and India.

The commodity prices are predicted to boost the Reserve Bank of Australia's index of commodity prices by 24%, which is considered to be an amazing prediction when set beside all the official predictions of a slowing global economy. In addition, the exporters of these products are ready to progress rapidly until 2006, regardless of the global economy.
