Canada's air war against Brazil
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization is expected on Mar 12, 1999, to issue its final ruling on the dispute between Canada and Brazil over each country's aerospace industry subsidies. The dispute stems from Bombardier's complaint that its Brazilian rival, Empresa Brasiliera de Aeronautica SA (Embraer), was using government subsidies to undercut its sales of regional jets. Brazil retaliated by filing a counter-complaint, citing Canada's seven industrial-development programs.

Ruling would be blow to aerospace industry
Article Abstract:
The Canadian aerospace industry may suffer when the federal government withdraws its C$300-million-a-year Technology Partnerships Canada program for the aerospace and defense industry. The World Trade Organization has declared in Feb 1999 that the program and the $3-billion Canada Account loan fund are prohibited subsidies under international trade rules. WTO recommended that Canada withdraw the subsidies identified within 90 days.
