Caring for the elderly: The issues
Article Abstract:
There is a growing trend in long-term care (LTC) for the elderly In the United States since the percentage of nursing-home residents with dementia and Alzheimer's disease has increased to 45.4, and the state and federal officials are trying to provide more eldercare services in homes and neighborhoods. This would make it significantly cheaper than nursing homes, but critics worry that states' home-and-community-based-services (HCBS) initiatives focus too much on cutting costs and do not offer counseling and consumer information to help family caregivers.

Evaluating Head Start: The issues
Article Abstract:
Head Start, a federally funded program was established in 1965 for low-income families that make significant, gains on several education and behavior measures, compared with non-Head Start children. However, some conservatives feel that Head Start has not lived up to its promise to raise the IQs of low-income children to the same level as middle-class children by the time they reach kindergarten.
