Caring is a health hazard
Article Abstract:
Despite patient wishes for more empathetic physicians, research on doctors trained to be more empathetic and communicative burn out and become exhausted. The study looked at doctors trained by University of Sydney's new graduate medical program, finding that women were more likely to burn out than men, who were more likely to shut down emotionally. Older students were also more likely to burn out than younger ones.

Once Darren Russell thought that he was not made for the world of medicine, but later he was trained in general practice and fell working in sexual health almost by accident through a job in Melbourne's biggest HIV practice. He knew he was doing the right thing because he felt an immediate connection, and became further involved in the stricken community.
