Insurers' deal stirs revolt
Article Abstract:
Prudential has unveiled plans to buy rival American General for $26.5 billion in stock. The news resulted in a dive in Prudential shares by 15%, slashing the initial takeover offer by almost $4 billion in the worst one- day rout for the London, UK-based insurer in more than a decade. The initial unpopularity of the deal, which would rank as the largest trans- Atlantic financial-services merger, prompted speculation that other suitors could enter the fray.
