Vodafone May See AT&T Wireless As Possible Last Piece to an Empire
Article Abstract:
Vodaphone is considering a bid for AT&T Wirelss. It would provide the company an expanded link into the US cellular telephone market. The Vodaphone system also uses a G.S.M.-based standard that would be compatible with AT&T's variant of G.S.M. Cingular would most likely be the chief competitor for the AT&T merger. Vodaphone has other financial considerations that may complicate an acquisition move at this time. It holds a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless and it wants to merge with the SFR mobile phone company owned by Vivendi.
