Cavaliers and roundheads

Article Abstract:

This article presents a sardonically humorous anticipation of the likely repercussions of the referendum in which Australians will decide whether their country should become a republic, with a president as head of state, or remain a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth continuing to hold that position. Relevant details include the results of a "yes" vote, such as turning Australia into two nations, and of a "no" vote, such as continuing Australia's status as a laughing stock of the world.

Let the games commence

Article Abstract:

The Olympic site-selection process of the first Olympics is satirically described. The proceedings begin with a three-day feast presided over by Juan Antonio Croesus. Roman, Carthaginian, Athenian, German, and British delegates all contest for the right to hold the first Olympics in their home cities. Sports and politics are discussed. Athens is ultimately chosen as the site.

GST: let the games commence

Article Abstract:

The Australian treasurer believes that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the best fiscal and taxation system that prepares the country to enter the 21st century and compete in the world market. However, the opposition leaders contend such a system imposes a heavy burden on the average Australian. Under this system, beer and cigarettes would be taxed at a higher rate.
