Cellphone Number Transfer Hits a Snag
Article Abstract:
The new law that enables cellphone customers to retain their phone numbers when they choose a new wireless provider has had an unexpected effect and impacted service negatively. The FCC is investigating why AT&T Wireless is making their new customers wait several days for their wireless telephones to work when switching providers normally takes hours. AT&T has reported that its automated switching computer process has failed 60% of the time and required manual checking of customer data. The process has also failed AT&T customers who are switching to new providers. Other companies are experiencing similar problems but not on the same scale as AT&T. Approximately 80,000 customers are switching to various providers every day.
