China's panda politics
Article Abstract:
China's rulers have considered Taiwan a defector province that must be reunited with the Chinese mainland even by force if necessary since 1949 and at present Chinese officials offered Taiwan a gift in the form of two pandas to resolve the standoff. Though the Taiwan people are happy but Taiwan's President wants the government to refuse this offer as he and the Taiwanese media feel that accepting the pandas as a gift could be equivalent to accepting Beijing's claim that Taiwan belongs to China.

Article Abstract:
The official Chinese commentary on the death of Pope John Paul II mixed praise for the pope's accomplishments with expressions of hope for a renewed dialogue with the Vatican. The Roman Catholic Church has established itself everywhere on earth, so China is the last place for the Vatican to establish the presence of the Catholic Church.
