Chipmakers' tailspin could last another year

The global semiconductor industry faces an uncertain future as chipmakers announced more plant shutdowns and profit shortfalls, and analysts warned that the industry will not recover until mid-2002. According to Scottsdale, AZ-based IC Insights, sales of semiconductors worldwide in 2001 will drop 21% to $139 billion from $177 billion in the previous year. Japan's leading five semiconductor manufacturers, namely Fujitsu Ltd, Hitachi Ltd, Mitsubishi Electric Corp, NEC Corp and Toshiba Corp are predicted to fall short of yearly profit goals. Also, Germany's chipmaker Infineon warned it would sustain a $512 million loss in 3rd qtr 2001.

Chipmakers shift focus to wireless devices as PCs founder

Chip manufacturers have shifted their focus on the development of communication chips because of the slowdown in demand for personal- computer chips in the US. Texas Instruments and Analog Devices both introduced a chip for use in cellular telephones and handheld devices on February 19, 2001. Industry analysts predicted that production of communication chips will pass personal-computer chips by 2004 or 2005.
