Toyota won't settle
Article Abstract:
Toyota Motor Co announced that it will reject an out-of-court settlement agreement offered by the Justice Department concerning charges that the pollution-detection computers, or 'on-board diagnostic' systems, installed on 2.2 million Toyota and Lexus models built from 1996 to 1998 were defective. According to insiders, the automaker is being asked by the government to pay at least $10 million and up to $75 million per vehicle in fines to settle the charges. Toyota's refusal to agree to the deal, which could have cost the company $100 million, is the first time that an automaker has turned down a settlement offer from the Justice Department related to emissions charges.

Chrysler dodges air bag probe; Hyundai scrutinized
Article Abstract:
ChryslerDaimler AG officials were able to convince National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulators that their minivan air bags were not as lethal as those found in four small cars. DaimlerChrysler regulatory chief Barry Felrice said the deaths were not due to a defect in the air bags' design but rather because of the longer usage period of the vehicles. NHTSA officials said they would continue to study why some car models have higher incidences of air bag deaths.
