Code name: mainstream; can 'open source' bridge the software gap?
Article Abstract:
In its new report, the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee will recommend that the government adopt open source software as the way to develop software, in order to keep up with overwhelming demand for top-quality software. Netscape's open-source mozilla effort on its Netscape 6.0 browser is being watched closely as a possible model for licensing, for the way that it lets open source and proprietary software coexist. If open source is to win over the mainstream corporate sector, it must accommodate firms that have different business models and that want to maintain ownership of their own intellectual property.
