Cold war's end hits Cray Computer
Article Abstract:
Cray Computer Corp will stop its development work on the Cray-3 supercomputer. The end of the cold war is cited as a possible reason. In Dec 1991, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, upset about development delays, cancelled its order for a Cray-3, and Cray Computer has not found another buyer. Previously, some customer in the defense or the intelligence community could always be found to buy such a cutting-edge product, but times have apparently changed. According to Gary Smaby of the Smaby Group, a consulting company, although it is not in the best interests of the nation that a product like the Cray-3 should fail, the government is no longer in a position to subsidize such technologies. The problem, says Smaby, has to do with the collapse of the 'Evil Empire.'

Dell Computer cuts prices on desktops and laptops
Article Abstract:
Dell Computer Corp will cut prices on nine desktop and laptop microcomputers. The cuts will range between $100 and $900. Dell's move comes four weeks after Compaq Computer Corp cut its prices by 34 percent. IBM has also cut prices on some models. Analysts say Dell's price cuts are prompted by Compaq's. According to a spokesman at Dell, the company's price cuts are 'the first in a series of aggressive actions' to maintain competitive advantage. Microcomputer companies are lowering their prices in response to industry growth that is slowing, but whereas the tactic is effective to promote sales, it is self-defeating in another way because profit margins are less. Compaq's price cuts are said to have narrowed the company's premiums almost to nothing.
