Cray in pact to use chip made by Sun
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc and Cray Research Inc announce an agreement to use Sun's Scalable Processor Architecture (SPARC) microprocessors in future products from Cray. Cray's new line of computers will cost between $1 million and $3 million and represents the company's first attempt at introducing open systems, mixing hardware and software from different vendors. The cooperative agreement also includes plans for the sharing of hardware and software technology to allow Sun computers and Cray supercomputers to work with one another. Sun's shares moved up $1.75 and closed at $33.25, while Cray's shares rose $2.50 closing at $47. Sun has been pushing the Sparc design throughout the industry in an effort to make the reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC) product a standard microprocessor.

Cypress sells chip unit for $23 million; praised U.S. start-up gets Japanese owners
Article Abstract:
Cypress Semiconductor Ltd sells its Ross Technology subsidiary to Fujitsu Ltd of Japan for $23 million. Once touted by Cypress as a sterling example of US entrepreneurship, Ross Technology has encountered financial troubles because Sun Microsystems Inc, to which it supplies Sparc microprocessors, has turned to Texas Instruments Inc as its main Sparc supplier. The sale is a positive move for Cypress, whose stock rose $1.25, to $12, on May 12, 1993. However, it was also a defeat for Cypress president TJ Rodgers, who has been vocal against US companies who have moved production to Asia. With its divestment of Ross, Cypress will focus on its core product lines: complex programmable chips and memory chips for workstations and big computers.
