Compaq mulls fate of Digital plant

Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, TX, is deciding whether to shut down the Canadian plant it incurred from its purchase of Digital Equipment Corp. The move to shut down the plant will result in 1,200 jobless employees. Compaq stated that it is currently appraising its 12 corporately-owned plants and its relations with 16 contract computer manufacturers. Peter Ciceri, president and managing director of Compaq's Canadian division, stated that the company anticipates to conclude its review and to reach a decision regarding the workers in Kanata in Ontario, Canada, in 30 days.

Com Dev to slash jobs, shut plant in major overhaul

Cambridge, Ontario, Canada-based Com Dev International Inc will eliminate 200 jobs, or 15% of its workforce, and close its wireless equipment facility in the US in an effort to overhaul its operations. The company, a producer of wireless phone and satellite equipment, will name new executives to head the its wireless and space divisions. In addition, Com Dev warned that its loss from operations for the third quarter of 1999 will be three times greater than analysts predicted due to declining sales.

Nortel Networks to close two Canadian plants, sell off eight
Article Abstract:
Nortel Networks will shut down two facilities in Belleville, Ontario, and Burnaby, British Columbia, as part of its efforts to leave the telecommunications equipment and manufacturing. The move will affect 510 jobs. The company will also sell eight plants in the US, Canada, France and Northern Ireland. This restructuring of the manufacturing operations will help Nortel save C$250 million to $300 million and make it more competitive against such rivals as Lucent Technologies Inc.
