Computer says: take 2 aspirin
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are experimenting with a new medical advice system that allows patients to call toll-free numbers to get computerized medical advice. Industry analysts note that the new system, which will cost around $300 per unit, will save money for HMOs in the long run. The new medical advice system is composed of a keyboard that is attached to a telephone. Users follow a series of questions about symptoms and, depending on what their symptoms are, get home-care advice or get scheduled for an appointment to see a physician. Observers note that the system will become popular because many patients prefer to solve their health problems on their own.
