Congress Is Close To Eliminating A Privacy Law
Article Abstract:
Banking, insurance and financial service lobbies have succeeded in getting both the Senate and the House to propose legislation that would undermine state privacy protections that prevent sharing of personal financial information among business affiliates in these industries. Under Senate and House proposals, thousands of businesses would be able to exchange financial data, however incorrect, without any consumer permission or input. California Senators Feinstein and Boxer are trying to add amendments that would adopt California privacy-protection legislation on a federal level, but the House has already passed legislation 392 to 30 that would pre-empt state law. Sen. Richard Shelby has led the battle for the Senate version that he feels accomodates the financial services sector but also upholds credit reporting standards.

Effective in 2006, the new legislation will offer drug benefits to 40 million elderly and disabled Americans. The Senate must now consider the controversial version passed by the House that was opposed by Democratic legislators. Sen. Edward Kennedy is proposing a filibuster to prevent full congressional passage of the bill.
