Putin's Democratic Present Fights His K.G.B. Past
Article Abstract:
Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin likes to project his image of a democratic-oriented leader. This effort is a major challenge for Putin whose government career was developed in the infamous KGB where he served as an intelligence officer. What concerns Putin is that people understand his emphasis on national security while trying to implement democratic, economic and social policies that offer political freedoms to Russians. Because of his support for a strong central government, Putin's limits on the media conflict with his commitment to political reforms.
