Complaints against debt collectors rose 560 percent between 1999 and 2005 as per the Federal Trade Commission. Most complaints involved allegations such as demanding larger payments than permitted by law, revealing alleged debts to third parties, failure to verify disputed debts and send written notices, making impermissible calls to consumer's workplace, and using misleading threats.
