American Airlines has become the first airline to be convicted of mishandling hazardous material. AMR, the airline's parent company, has admitted wrongdoing and paid an $8 million penalty. The lawsuit was filed by federal investigators after uncovering numerous instances of violations at the carrier's operation in Miami, FL, and Latin America.
