FCC shoots down long-distance deal

The Federal Communications Commission has rejected the proposal of US West and Ameritech to market Qwest's Communication's long-distance service. The commission reports that deal could give unfair advantage for the two telecommunication providers by offering one-stop shopping service to customers. The deal also violates a law that allows regional Bells to venture into long distance only after opening their local markets to competition. US West and Ameritech contend that their agreement conforms with federal regulations and the long-distance service will be provided by a different carrier.

FCC to appeal ruling allowing sale of phone customers' info
Article Abstract:
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a ruling that would allow phone companies to use ot peddle customer information to market other services. The court said that the constraints adopted by the Federal Communcations Commission in 1998 violated the First Amendment. In 1998, the FCC has adopted rules that prohibit phone companies from using and selling customer information to third-party marketers without their consent. The FCC said that it will appeal the court ruling.
