Valley of plenty fights to survive
Article Abstract:
California's Central Valley, considered as the richest farmlands in the world, is being threatened by urban development. The valley, which produces one-tenth of the US' agricultural output despite comprising only 1% of its entire cropland, is losing ground to land developers who have been willing to pay $30,000 an acre for the privelege. It is projected that when the valley's population becomes more than double in 2040, over a milion acres of fertile cropland will have been converted to housing facilities.
