Ford SUVs get air bags to protect in rollovers

Ford Motor Co will announce on Jan 12 ,2000, the invention of an air bag designed specifically for its sport-utility vehicles (SUVs). The curtain air bag, which is mounted over the front and rear side windows, are designed to protect the car occupants in cases of rollovers, the most common type of fatal accident in SUVs. Ford, which will begin installing the curtain air bag on its 2001 model SUVs, hopes to install the device on all its SUVs within four years.

Ford might drop Firestone tires under investigation
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co said it could replace Bridgestone/Firestone as a tire supplier if consumers refuse to buy vehicles outfitted with Firestone tires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires whose treads reportedly peeled off its casings. A spokeswoman of Bridgestone/Firestone said they are coordinating with Ford to resolve all issues related to the tires.

Another tread problem for Ford

Ford Motor Co announced on Sep 13, 2000 that it is investigating Continental tires used on Lincoln Navigation sporty-utility vehicles for possible tread separation problems. Reported cases involving problems with two P245/75R-16 Continental Contitrac AS MXS tires have been few and all came from Saudi Arabia. Continental Tire Inc said that the automaker is overracting to publicity of the recall of Firestone tires that have been blamed for several fatal accidents in the US.
