Putting the cart before the horse
Article Abstract:
When buying a computer system, it is always best to choose software first before choosing the hardware. Determining one's main software applications means choosing the operating system which, in turn, determines the type of computer to buy. Operating system categories, in the order of their popularity, are: DOS, DOS-Windows, Macintosh, Unix, OS/2 and Amiga. Unix is not for beginners, OS/2 is difficult while Amiga is useful only for games and graphics but is definitely not mainstream. The real choices are limited to DOS-Windows and Apple. DOS runs on IBM, Compaq, Tandy and in about 70 million machines worldwide. Microsoft Windows 3.0 is a Macintosh-like operating system for DOS 80386SX or higher computers. The Macintosh operating system is superior to Windows 3.0 but Mac machines are more expensive. Macs are ideal for desktop publishing. Buying a computer system means choosing not just software but also price and level of support and services.
