Warm spring, higher energy costs bite deeply into B.C. Power's profit
Article Abstract:
British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, the third-largest utility in Canada, blamed warm spring and the 64% hike in energy costs for the lower net income it gained during the first quarter of 1998. The company reported C$50 million in net income during the first quarter, declining by C$25 million compared to the year-ago result. The decline was a result of lower electricity consumption by residential customers because of the warmer temperatures during the spring. Net income was also affected by lower consumption from the industrial sector, mainly because of the strike at Fletcher Challenge Canada Ltd.
