Disney buys 43% stake in Infoseek

Walt Disney Corp. will acquire a 43% interest in Infoseek, which provides an Internet directory, search capability, messaging and other services, in exchange for $70 million and its $250 million stake in Starwave, a Web developing company. Disney aims to widen its market reach to include Internet users through Infoseek, the seventh most popular Internet gateway in the US. Disney will provide information about its films, theme park attractions and TV shows and market travel packages and merchandise as well. The company is among the latest major communications companies that have invested substantial amounts in popular Internet gateways or Web sites that attract the most visits.

Compaq Computer Corp's performance declined from being the world's leading PC manufacturer to No. 2 vendor of computers and systems consulting. The company is facing some challenges such as poor sales in the PC industry and rapidly changing technology that left inventory obsolete. The departure on Apr 18, 1999, of CEO and CFO Eckhard Pfeiffer and Earl Mason, respectively, came at a time when Pfeiffer and his team were integrating the 30,000 workers of Compaq and 53,500 workers of Digital.

AMD programs a turnaround

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) is counting on its Athlon microprocessors to pull the company out of financial trouble. The product also represents the Sunnyvale, CA-based company's first attempt to grab a share on Intel's hold on the high-end PC market. ADM CEO Jerry Sanders stated that the company is spending billions of dollars in an effort to secure 30% share of all microprocessors delivered by 2001.
