Documentation? It's often better to go buy a book
Article Abstract:
Three reference books on local area networks (LAN) are evaluated. 'PC Magazine Guide to Connectivity' by Frank J. Defler Jr provides a good overview of networking with clear explanations of networking terminology. Published by Ziff-Davis Press and sold for $39.95, the book also provides opinions on various products and how they fared in laboratory tests. Names, addresses and phone numbers of the vendors are listed. The book comes with a floppy disk of LAN utility programs developed at PC Magazine. 'Inside Novell Netware' by Debra Niedemiller-Chaffins from New Riders Publishing is an indispensable, hands-on guide for new LAN administrators. This $29.95 book gives step-by-step instructions on how to set up a Novell network, with detailed illustrations and screen shots showing the process. Adrian J. King's 'Running Lantastic' from Bantam Computer Books is an excellent, objective guide to using Artisoft's Lantastic. The $27.95 book can be substituted for the product's installation manual.

The shrink-wrapped LAN
Article Abstract:
Companies that sell microcomputers are responding to slowed economic conditions by offering entire local area networks (LANs). Such products, marketed in a convenient, prepackaged arrangement, are sometimes called 'shrink-wrapped LANs' or a 'LANs-in-a-box.' Such products typically will include a network operating system, interface adapters and cables, and even the microcomputers that will attach to the network. Northgate Computer Systems, for example, markets its Omnilan system, which is a package that includes everything from pre-purchase consulting to ongoing system support. This sort of a marketing strategy reverses an industry trend that had tended toward increasing price competition. Northgate is reviving an older practice, charging higher prices but including added value and support. Northgate is doing well, with sales of $128.1 million and profits of $3.7 million in the first three quarters of 1991.

Just how dead is the mainframe?
Article Abstract:
Corporate Computing, a new computer magazine based in Foster City, CA, has performed tests directly comparing the file-server performance of an $845,000 Sequent Symmetry 2000 mainframe, a $21,668 Dell Powerline 450SE microcomputer and four other systems. The Sequent was the overall winner in most of the tests, but the Dell performed surprisingly well and was significantly faster than the other microcomputers compared. The tests were conducted at the new independent computer-testing facility Ziff Labs, which is financed by Corporate Computing publisher Ziff-Davis Publishing Co and has space and equipment to duplicate virtually any network configuration.
