Down the line: CP Rail announces a move to Calgary - and another wave of layoffs

CP Ltd, the parent company of CP Rail, announced in Nov 1995, that it plans to move its railway headquarters from Montreal, Quebec, to Calgary, Alberta. It also plans to layoff 1,450 administrative workers. The announcement came shorty after the privatization of Canadian National Railways.

Article Abstract:
Canada's federal government has postponed deciding whether to grant Expo 2005 bid-status to Calgary or Ottawa-Hull until financial responsibility issues are worked out. An independent panel recommended Calgary, but Ottawa-Hull would draw a larger crowd.

Silverberg first became a police officer in 1971 at the age of 22. She is now 45, and has recently been appointed to head the 1,132-member Calgary, Alberta, Police Service. She has a degree in sociology, is married and has two children.
