Europe's beef scare

With new cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad-cow disease, occurring in different countries in Europe, the European Union ordered a fresh round of tests for the disease throughout 2001. The human form of BSE is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which has claimed 77 people in Britain, one in Ireland, and two in France since it first surfaced in 1985.

Behind the science of mad-cow disease
Article Abstract:
The infectious agent in beef tainted with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad-cow disease, which leads to Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in humans, is a molecule called a prion. Prions are a new class of infectious agent, which were discovered in the 1980s by Stanley Prusiner, and which have no DNA.

Ten innovations, which can change the normal lives of human beings with an eye on the future, are presented. These ideas which looks to be silly, impractical and dangerous in the first place when developed actually enhances one's life and these innovations are finding commercial applications also.
