Life after I.B.M.? Yes, and often sweet
Article Abstract:
Some IBM employees who have decided to avail of the individual transition option or were laid off are discovering that life after IBM is better than life in IBM. Those who left earlier, like Jim Balassone who got out in 1989, realized that having IBM on one's resume was a plus. Balassone is now VP of sales and service at Hitachi Data Systems. Despite the success stories, like that of Tomima Edmark, who has since found her calling as an entrepreneur and book author, there are many who are bitter about their separation from the company. Some, on the other hand, complain about the stifling corporate culture and the lack of appreciation of innovative ideas. Those who left recently are also confronted by a growing negativism in other corporations directed toward former IBM employees.
