Phone companies work on ringing in extra lines

Telephone companies are testing a new service called voice over DSL. The service, which allows several telephone extensions or computers piggyback on high-speed Internet link called digital subscriber line, is targeted primarily for businesses and is expected to rollout on a large-scale by late 2000. It will also help telephone companies decongest their networks and eliminate the need for costly installation once the service is in.

Phone service complaints hit record

Article Abstract:

Long-distance telephone companies in the United States have received a record number of complaints from consumers in 1999. Consumers complain about slamming, high rates, bad service and deceptive marketing to federal and states regulators. In addition, consumer groups believe that Worldcom's proposed acquisition of Sprint will reduce competitive pressure on the carriers as the combined carrier will control 80% of the long- distance market.

AT&T wireless business shares will go public

Article Abstract:

AT and T Corp plans to offer part of its wireless assets in an initial public offering in spring of 2000. The offering, which should generate $8 billion to $10 billion, is expected to include up to 19% of AT and T's wireless business. The remaining shares will be awarded to AT and T investors at the end of 2000. CEO C. Michael Armstrong also announced that the company is expected to reach its earnings and revenue goals for 1999 and 2000.
