Article Abstract:
Telephone companies are testing a new service called voice over DSL. The service, which allows several telephone extensions or computers piggyback on high-speed Internet link called digital subscriber line, is targeted primarily for businesses and is expected to rollout on a large-scale by late 2000. It will also help telephone companies decongest their networks and eliminate the need for costly installation once the service is in.

Consumers complain about slamming, high rates, bad service and deceptive marketing to federal and states regulators. In addition, consumer groups believe that Worldcom's proposed acquisition of Sprint will reduce competitive pressure on the carriers as the combined carrier will control 80% of the long- distance market.
