FCC to make a call on phone deal

SBC Communications Inc's proposed merger with Ameritech Corp is encountering setbacks posed by several huge telecom companies that describe the deal to be filled with unreasonable conditions. Competitors of the two phone companies called on the FCC to disapprove the consolidation, noting that the conditions will not largely affect SBC should it violate the agreement. Meanwhile, the FCC stated that it is taking a close scrutiny of the complaints to aid its decision slated to be released in fall 1999.

FCC chmn Willian Kennard said that the proposed merger of SBC Communications Inc and Ameritech Corp would not be beneficial to consumers and that he wanted to meet with the chairmen of both firms. Completion of the $61 billion merger of the two telecommunications giants would make it more difficult to open up the local markets of both firms to competitors.
