With good times at an end, catalog CEO gets early holiday
Article Abstract:
Lands' End, a large mail-order catalog company, has to replace its CEO Michael Smith who chose to resign during the 1998 holiday season with industry consultant David F. Dryer. The holidays are usually one of the most hectic periods of the year for the firm because of heightened consumer demand. Davenport & Co. analyst Kenneth Gassman observed that the situation must be critical for management changes to be conducted at this time. Land's End has been experiencing duller business throughout 1998 with lower stock value, sluggish inventory turnover, fewer orders from customers, and duller sales growth.

Article Abstract:
General Electric executives are likely to be flooded by ego-stroking calls from headhunters. They are targeting executives passed over as CEO Jack Welch's successor and who could be wooed to run Fortune 500 companies. At the top of the list are GE's Aircraft Engines div head James McNerney and GE's Power Systems unit chief Robert Nardelli. Both were considered the likely successors to Welch before he announced the new CEO-designate, Jeffrey Immelt.
