Inspector: Defense must reprioritize clearances
Article Abstract:
The Defense Dept Deputy Inspector Gen Donald Mancuso has reported to the Senate Armed Services Cmte that the Defense Dept is not maximizing the use of critical resources in its security clearance program. He cited the continuing failure of the Pentagon to focus its background probes on, and update security clearances of, large numbers of personnel in mission critical or high risk positions. Mancuso noted that investigative resources are instead being channeled to less important cases. He said that legislators and the Pentagon would have an even bigger problem regarding Pentagon security clearances by 2002 if the issue is not dealt with immediately and aggressively.

Senator: Lockheed trying $100M scam
Article Abstract:
Sen Tom Harkin has accused Lockheed Martin Space Systems of creating nonexistent losses on the sale of some defense facilities in order to reap millions of dollars worth of taxpayers' money. Harkin said the Dept of Defense (DOD) paid for improvements on buildings, depreciation, repair and maintenace of buildings owned by Lockheed Martin in Silicon Valley. However, when the company sold the facilities, it applied the proceeds to the land but not on the buildings. That prevented the DOD from gettting a portion of the gains from the land sale.
