FTC steps up gas price probe: frustrations rise with pump tally
Article Abstract:
Gas station attendants continue to endure the outbursts of frustrated, irate motorists as consumer concerns about rocketing gasoline prices appear to be increasing even more than the prices themselves. A gallon of gas in the Midwest already costs more than $2, and a survey has found that Chicago, IL, is charging the highest gas prices in the US. No one argues that the gas situation in the US in 2000 compares to the oil shortage in 1973. However, the reasons for the existing gasoline price crisis are quite vague, with oil companies blaming EPA regulations, the EPA blaming the oil companies, and motorists accusing gas station owners of ripping them off.

New York cellphone ban likely
Article Abstract:
The New York State Assembly will pass legislation prohibiting the use of cellular phones while driving. The proposed law will fine New York drivers up to $100 when they are caught holding on to cellular phones after Dec 1, 2001. However, drivers can use their phones during emergencies, while fines for first-time offenders could be waived until Mar 1, 2002 if drivers can prove that they bought a device that will allow them to talk without holding the phone in their hands.
