Head of J. Walter Thompson quits unexpectedly over health after strong years for agency

Peter A. Schweitaer is succeeding Chris Jones as chief executive of J. Walter Thompson. Mr, Jones, the youngest cheif executive in the firm's history, is stepping down for health reasons. He is credited with extending the firm's services into nontraditional areas, and with improving Thompson's operations, as well as recruiting new clients who brought in billings of $2 billion within the last two years.

Sal DeVito and Ellis J. Verdi's collaboration has brought attention for smart, provocative ads for NY Magazine, Pro-Choice Public Education, Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign and many others with such success, the agency seemed to hardly notice the recession in the ad industry, with billings at $134 million.
