Ford: other Firestone tires fail, too
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co on Jun 13, 2001 presented its findings on Bridgestone/Firestone Inc's replacement tires to US regulators and congressional investigators refuting claims by the tiremaker that the automaker's Explorer sport-utility vehicle (SUV) has a defective design. According to Ford, tires made up to its specifications but used as replacement tires on other makes of trucks and SUVs fail at a rate that should require government investigation. Firestone disputes Ford's findings, saying that Wilderness and ATX tires used as original equipment on Explorers had a claims rate five times that of the same tires supplied to the replacement market.

Hyundai's new SUV may be a bit late, but that's OK
Article Abstract:
Hyundai Motor America will not be shipping its much-awaited Santa Fe sport-utility vehicle until the new year 2001, which is well beyond the original shipping target date of spring 2000. The company's CEO Fibarr O'Neill, however, is not bothered by the delay, preferring to have all the quality problems of the car sorted out before serving it to the public. Hyundai has a history of notoriously bad electrical systems and other serious quality problems with its cars which resulted in the worst word- of-mouth brand image in the business.

Ford bites $3B bullet to replace tires
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co announced on May 22, 2001 that it will spend about $3 billion to replace 13 million Wilderness AT tires on its pickups and sport-utility vehicles. This is because the automaker considers the tires as 'an unacceptable risk' to its customers. However, Bridgestone/Firestone Inc said Ford's announcement is an effort to disguise a defect in the design of its Explorer SUV. Among the tires to be replaced are over 1 million that were put on vehicles after a recall on Firestone tires a year ago.
