Rentals soar as stores do battle
Article Abstract:
Hollywood Entertainment has eliminated its single-night rentals to launch a new promotion that will allow customers to rent new movie releases for five days. Hollywood's latest move comes while competition between the second-biggest video rental retailer and industry leader Blockbuster Entertainment for more of the revived home-video rental market soars. Meanwhile, Blockbuster responded by announcing that its stores will be well-supplied with copies of new releases. The growing competition between the companies, which escalated following new revenue-sharing deals with studios, is already resulting in more membership and projected revenue.

Giant retailers shift, sell more appliances
Article Abstract:
Retailers in the US are changing their strategies in marketing and selling household appliances. Unlike in the past when department stores and a few specialty stores were the backbone of appliance retailing, consumers now get lower prices and a wide range of products from mass merchandisers and the Internet. Consumers are expected to benefit more with the transformation as retailers, such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Lowe's Cos Inc and Home Inc, form alliances and develop Web strategies with major appliance manufacturers.
