GM takes stake in Fiat

General Motors Corp (GM), the world's top motor vehicle manufacturer, will acquire a 20% stake in the world's No. 7 carmaker, Fiat Auto SpA of Italy, in exchange for shares of stocks worth $2.4 billion. The deal, which will raise Fiat's holdings in GM to 5.1%, is still subject to the approval of regulators from both the US and the EU. GM's agreement with Fiat is expected to result in two joint ventures that can generate savings of $2 billion annually in purchasing and design costs.

VIN: how to know a car by its number
Article Abstract:
The 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) for cars and trucks was standardized and required by federal regulators starting with 1981 models. The codes are assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers under a contract with the NHTSA. The VIN gives information on where the vehicle was built, the manufacturer, security code and model year. A VIN starting with 3VW indicates that a vehicle was made in Mexico by Volkswagen.

Honda develops tech muscle

Honda Motor Company Ltd has revealed plans to fast track the manufacture of fuel-efficient systems in its gasoline-electric hybrid power plants in time for the market debut of the Civic smal car in the US in 2001. The move is Honda's attempt to become the auto industry's technology leader. The company also announced that its pollution-free Honda four-cylinder gasoline engine will be prepared for a worldwide launch by 2005.
