Noranda magnesium to face stiff duties

Toronto, Ont.-based Noranda Inc. will be forced to pay high tariffs on magnesium it ships to the United States. Noranda, which has completed a $733 million magnesium plant in Quebec, will be penalized by duties imposed by the U.S. International Trade Commission.

United Kingdom's Rio Tinto PLC and Vancouver, BC-based Aber Resources Ltd. have suspended devleopment of the $1.3 billion Diavik diamond mine project in the Northwest Territories. Robert Nault, Canada's Minister of Indian Affairs, is negotiating with Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. over the environmental aspects of the project.
