GM to make wider use of oil-change monitors
Article Abstract:
General Motors will make use of Oil-Life System, a device that monitors different engine functions to know how much useful oil life remains. The system will be phased in over the next five years on most of the cars and trucks GM produces in North America. GM's Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillacs with Northstar engines and some pickups are already equipped with the system, which could stretch oil-change intervals for some drivers to 15,000 miles against the 3,000 to 5,000 commonly recommended. GM claims Oil-Life System could save 40 million quarts of oil annually.

Ford plans zestier V-8s in '99 models
Article Abstract:
Ford Motors is set to start upgrading its high-tech V-8 truck engines in fall 1998. The decision is a response to heavy criticism from Ford's board of directors that the company's V-8 engines are underpowered and that General Motor's old-fashioned, push-rod V-8s have been rated 20 to 30 horsepower more than Ford's overhead-camshaft designs. Industry experts stated that the issue regarding the V-engines became so irritating that even the company's board members complained about the engines' power discrepancy.
