Good Economy. Bad Job Market. Huh?
Article Abstract:
Business productivity has showed encouraging signs for a much-awaited US economic recovery, but other expected benefits have yet to develop. Because businesses have managed to increase productivity without having to add workers or increase salaries, unemployment has remained a major problem for US workers who in turn limit their spending due to personal financial restraints. This impacts demand for consumer products and services. The Bush administration's strategy is to foster an economic recovery through stockholder spending created by improved dividends from their investments. The traditional path to recovery via job creation and increased wages may not be pursued under this administration.

FOR DEMOCRATS, ECONOMY'S SURGE POSES CHALLENGE
Article Abstract:
2003 third quarter economic figures show the kind of improvement that Pres. Bush needs to show how his tax and economic policies are contributing to an economic recovery. Democratic presidential candidates know this change in financial fortunes could undermine their efforts to emphasize the problems of a weaker economy under a Republican administration. These third quarter results are the fastest growth spurt since 1984, but Democrats believe that the lag in new jobs and employment will remain a problem for the Bush campaign.
