Greenspan's caution about stock prices again puts market on guard
Article Abstract:
Federal Reserve Chmn Alan Greenspan has warned that the large increase in stock market prices has resulted in consumer spending levels that threaten to produce inflationary pressures in the US economy. In his testimony before the House Banking Committee in Feb 2000, Greenspan declared that the economy would be healthier if stock prices would rise more slowly. Analysts say that the remark is the harshest that Greenspan is able to make regarding his anxiety over the performance of the stock market.

Record home sales drive economy
Article Abstract:
Statistics reveal that consumers were confident enough to buy houses at a record rate in Mar 2001. The high home sales numbers indicate that consumers will keep spending because home buyers typically also buy appliances, furniture and other items to fill up their homes. New home sales rose 4.2% to an annual rate of 1.02 million homes in Mar 2001. Sales of existing homes rose 4.8% to an annual rate of 5.44 million homes.

Slump keeps truckers from truckin'
Article Abstract:
The trucking industry went into a downturn in 2000 and shows few signs of recovery because of a sharp slowdown among its biggest customers and rising diesel prices. According to US Xpress Enterprises co-Chmn Patrick Quinn, truckers will not enjoy a recovery until in spring 2002. Quinn says January and the first part of Feb 2001 were six of the worst weeks he has seen in the industry in 25 years. Statistics revealed that trucking tonnage started to fall below year-earlier levels in summer 2000, as the slump in heavy manufacturing began to emerge.
